Another Chapter Year Comes to a Close! - Letter From the President

2008 has been a spectacular year for the ACHE – SouthEastTexasChapter. Looking back, as your outgoing President/Chair, I have been truly blessed with the opportunity to work with so many talented Chapter members that have made major efforts to ensure positive results for the following:
  • A year end record number of Chapter members: 1152 (a 16.4% increase in membership over last year).  Our Chapter is one of the four largest ACHE independent chapters in the nation.

  • Four quarterly educational/business sessions with high attendance and very positive evaluations

  • A record four Category I sessions with attendance exceeding room capacity.

  • Very successful Dr. Jephtha W. Dalston Annual Awards & Recognition Program resulting in awarding each of two MHA students a $2500 scholarship.

  • Again, another very successful annual golf tournament resulting in more than 140 players making up 35 teams and a cash contribution of more than $7000 to support United Way of Greater Houston.

  • Startup of ACHE – SETC’s second Local Program Council in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont, Orange, and Port Arthur).  A core group of local healthcare leaders have agreed to move forward in further developing the LPC infrastructure and programs for 2009.

  • All of the major MHA programs in the southeast Texas region were visited by delegations led by David Fine, FACHE (Current Regent) and Ron Castagno, FACHE (Immediate Past Regent). The benefits of joining ACHE national and opportunities available, as a member of ACHE – SETC, were discussed.

  • ACHE – SETC sponsored the first of a series of panel discussions developed by the University of Texas School of Public Health.

  • ACHE – SETC sponsored the first Board of Governor’s Exam (BOGE) Work Study Group. Directors of our Chapter’s Board helped candidates seeking an ACHE Fellow’s credential by providing presentations on “knowledge areas” covered in the BOGE.  The ACHE goal for this year for members to pass the BOGE was 9. 15 in our region passed, realizing a 166.7% increase.

  • The development of the first ACHE Congress Scholarships to be awarded to as many as five MHA students to attend the 2009 Congress for Healthcare Leadership in Chicago.

  • Unprecedented year-end financial success for the Chapter due to a strong commitment and support by major sponsors.

  • Based on the results for the 2008 Chapter Member Needs Survey conducted by ACHE national and just released (December 30th ) ACHE – SETC received a mean score of 7.96 for members’ satisfaction with our Chapter compared to the satisfaction mean score of all chapters of 7.06. Thank you for your confidence in my leadership of the Chapter this year. It has been a privilege to have the opportunity to serve. I encourage you to continue supporting the Chapter in the manner you have and welcome Ed Tucker as he assumes the role of President/Chair for 2009. I will continue to serve on the Board of Directors and along with the other directors help provide whatever support Ed may need to promote the success of ACHE – SETC for the new year.

Happy New Year to all of you and best wishes for continued personal success!

Craig Cordola, FACHE
