Message from the Regent

Winter 2010

2010 has been a busy year with the Chapter providing an increasing number of educational and networking opportunities for its members. I’d like to highlight some of our Chapter’s most significant accomplishments from this past year.

Spring

The Chapter held its first quarter educational session and business meeting on March 4, entitled “Managing the Health Care Cost Curve: Our Leadership Challenge” presented by George V. Masi, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer , Harris County Hospital District. The Brazos Valley Local Program Council (LPC) held a 6 hour Category I event on April 9 called “Aggressively Improve Cost, Quality and Throughput” presented by Chip Caldwell, Jr., FACHE (President, Chip Caldwell & Associates). Attendees learned how to implement Lean Six Sigma and the Toyota Production System in their organizations. In addition, the Chapter held another successful Board of Governors Exam Work Study Group that resulted in 11 Chapter members moving one step closer to Fellow status.

Summer

The summer months were quite active, starting on May 11 the Chapter held its second quarter educational session and business meeting “The Health Care Reform Bill 2010: “Key Cost Control Strategies” presented by The Honorable Nancy L. Johnson, Senior Public Policy Advisor: Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell, & Berkowitz, PC. The Golden Triangle LPC held a Category II event on July 7 entitled “American Recovery and Re-Investment Act & HITECH:  Effects on Healthcare Organizations and Physician Practices” presented by Hank Fanberg, Director of Technology Advocacy, CHRISTUS Health. Our Chapter, in association with ACHE – National, embarked on a pilot diversity program in collaboration with the Asian Healthcare Leaders Association to continue to diversify the Chapter and to reflect the population of Houston and southeast Texas. At the end of the summer the Chapter held its third quarter educational session and business meeting on August 19. Kenneth E. Thorpe, PhD, The Robert W. Woodruff Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy & Management, in the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University gave his presentation on “Role of Prevention and Care Coordination”.

Fall

In September, the Chapter held yet another successful golf tournament to benefit the United Way and to provide funding for scholarships for our Chapter’s student members. I would like to congratulate Deborah A. Alsante, FACHE and the Outreach Committee for their tremendous efforts. On October 14 the Chapter held a meeting at St. Joseph’s Medical Center called “Disney’s Approach to Leadership Excellence and People Management for Healthcare Professionals” followed by the Mark Ryan Symposium on November 4 where George Masi, FACHE, COO, Harris County Hospital District presented on “Leader Competency: Building a Learning Model That Works for You”. The Chapter’s fall events concluded with the third quarter educational session and business meeting on November 11 where James B. Peake, MD, Lieutenant General USA (Ret), Former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs presented on “Health Reform & Opportunities – Perspective from the Public Sector” and the Chapter held a Category I educational session entitled “Medical Staff Relations: Aligning the Medical Staff with Organizational Strategies”.

Winter

Chapter board representatives recently completed their yearly visits to the local members of the higher education network. The Chapter visited Texas Women’s University, The University of Houston – Clear Lake, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University and Lamar University to inform their students of the opportunities available to them through ACHE and our local Chapter. This winter we have another Category I event scheduled in College Station. The Brazos Valley LPC hosted Carson Dye, FACHE, Partner at Witt/Kieffer, who presented on “Practical Leadership Strategies in an Age of Change” on Friday, December 10.

I would also like to recognize Ronald J. Castagno, FACHE and the Chapter’s leadership for making 2010 another successful year for ACHE – SouthEastTexasChapter and I look forward to what our next Chapter president, Todd A. Caliva, FACHE, has in store for us in 2011.
