Welcome to ACHE SouthEast Texas Chapter!

Inaugural Meeting of First Local Program Council of the Southeast Texas Chapter a Major Success!

Due to the efforts of Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health (HSC-SRPH) MHA students, nationally renowned health-system transformation leader and author Mr. Quint Studer spoke for the first time at a university-sponsored conference. The author of Hardwiring Excellence spoke on Friday, September 21, at the inaugural meeting of the Bryan/College Station Local Program Council of our ACHE chapter. About 240 health administrators, other health professionals, and students from the region and throughout Texas attended the conference hosted by the School and the St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.  Even more students joined Mr. Studer on Friday afternoon for an informal meeting on campus.

Master of Health Administration (MHA) students and faculty produced a creative CD invitation to Mr. Studer. In his 3 hour presentation, Mr. Studer addressed the "Studer" approach and leadership development changing the culture as it relates to health organizations. The Studer Group is an outcomes-based health-care consulting firm devoted to teaching evidence-based tools and processes that organizations can immediately use to create and sustain outcomes in service and operational excellence.

There were enthusiastic responses to his presentation from the MHA students, all of whom are introduced to Hardwiring Excellence upon admission to the school. "His captivating presentation will remain as one of the highlights of my time at the School of Rural Public Health," said Ms. Katy Robertson, a student association leader at A&M.  Another A&M student association leader, Tonya Kelm said: “This memory will be engrained in our leadership throughout our healthcare careers.”

Dr. Larry Gamm, head of the Department of Health Policy and Management for the HSC-SRPH, said he thinks Quint Studer’s approach encapsulates “the ideas and values that we want our students to exemplify and build upon."  Gamm and Jack Buckley, CEO of St. Joseph Regional Health System in Bryan, are co-chairs of our Chapter’s Bryan/College Station Local Program Council.

Editor’s Comments:

Congratulations to Dr. Larry Gamm and Jack Buckley, co-chairs of our Chapter’s Local Program Council, and the MHA students of the Texas A&M School of Public Health for the outstanding success of their university-sponsored conference. While many, behind-the-scenes, people have been involved in helping the Bryan/College Station Local Program Council establish the Council a special note of gratitude goes to the late Dr. Jeptha W. Dalston’s for his major contribution in starting this group on their journey.  Dr. Dalston held a special fondness for Texas A&M and he would have been so proud to have witnessed, first-hand, how well the development of the Council has progressed.
