From the
President’s Desk
What
a great year your Chapter has experienced with several new
records achieved! To summarize:
- Record attendance at breakfast
and Category I sessions!
- Record attendance for the
"What's up Boss?" event!
- Record number of SETC members!
- Very successful joint Category I
program with ACPE!
- Highly successful Annual Golf
Tournament!
- Outstanding support of our Sponsors!
We began 2011 with the 1st Quarter Educational Session with a
record number (over 300 registrants) to hear keynote speaker
Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, President, Clinical Services and CMO of
Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA, speak on "Leadership's Impact on
Quality Initiatives: How Data is a Crucial Piece of 21st Century
Approach to Quality Medicine." The first Category I panel
discussion of the year, "Building the Hospital of Tomorrow:
Rehabilitate, Renovate or Replace" had an impressive
registration of 116.
Since its creation in 2005 by Mark Wallace, President/CEO, Texas
Children's Hospital, the "What's up Boss?" (WUB) event has
become a biennial tradition. The night of October 20th will well
be remembered by those who attended. Over 165 leaders, early,
mid and senior careerists enjoyed the opportunity to dialogue
about career development while enjoying the ambience and great
food of Trevisio's restaurant in the TMC. In addition, I was
honored to present Dr. David J. Fine, FACHE with a $5,000
academic scholarship in his name. I also had the privilege of
formally recognizing honored guests R.O. Hunton, President, The
Hunton Group and Monzer Hourani, President of Medistar
Corporation, for their outstanding sponsorship support of the
WUB event and the Chapter.
On Sept 27th, ACHE-SETC joined with the ACPE (American College
of Physician Executives) and presented a Category I panel
discussion on "Accountable Care Organizations: Implications and
Impact." Another record attendance: 179!
ACHE - SETC membership is at an all time high! As of this
writing your Chapter has 1,354 members! ACHE-SETC is one of the
largest ACHE affiliated chapters in the U.S. Special thanks to
the ACHE-SETC Membership Committee for their outstanding work in
stimulating membership growth with a 100 day campaign.
The Chapter's 12th Annual Golf Tournament was highly successful
with 120 participants and 30 teams. As a result of the
Tournament's success the Star of Hope Mission was the recipient
of a check for $8,346.77.
Most important: Your Chapter is successful because of YOU and
the commitment of our sponsors. Thank you for a GREAT YEAR! It
has been an honor to serve you.

Regent's
Message
Our
Chapter President, Todd Caliva, had an extremely successful year
and he deserves our appreciation for a job well done. The
increase in membership is particularly noteworthy and creates
tremendous momentum for continued growth in 2012.
Incoming President, Deborah Alsante, is developing an exciting
agenda of offerings that will reward our membership and serve as
further attraction for more to join ACHE. I encourage everyone
to plan to attend at least one ACHE-SETC event during 2012.
As part of your planning resolutions for 2012, members should
begin their fellowship advancement strategy. Current fellows
needing to recertify can plan to obtain their Healthcare
Management Continuing Education credits. The great news is that
ACHE-SETC offers Category I panel discussions throughout the
year to supplement the credits available through Congress or
cluster programming provided by the national organization.
Have a successful and rewarding 2012, and remember to include
ACHE participation with your colleagues in ACHE-SETC.

What’s up Boss Recap – Success!
Once again, the biennial "What’s up Boss?"
(WUB) event was a huge success. This year's theme was "Pathway
to a Purpose Driven Career". A record 165 people were in
attendance at TMC Trevisio's restaurant. Health care
administration graduate students, early and mid-careerists were
able to meet with health care leaders to gain advice on their
careers and to listen to seasoned professional experiences. 40
health care leaders from around the Southwest Texas region
graciously donated a few hours of their time to serve as Leader
Hosts. This was also the first time that participants were able
to dialogue with two leaders over the course of 2 hours. The
evening event went smoothly and will definitely be repeated for
future WUB events.

1st Quarter
Educational (Breakfast) Session March 1th, 2012
The first quarterly breakfast meeting will be
quickly approaching before we know it. It will be held on
Thursday March 1, 2011 at the Houstonian Hotel from 7-9am. For
this session, we are very excited to be joined by John Nance,
J.D. Mr. Nance was one of the founding member of the National
Patient Safety Foundation at the AMA and a member of the
Executive Committee who has served on the board for 9 years.
Most importantly, he was one of the pioneers of the pivotal
safety revolution in professional communication, teamwork and
leadership known in aviation as CRM, Crew Resource Management.
His book about safety in human systems entitled Blind Trust,
published internationally in 1986, is widely credited with
helping to spark not only the universal acceptance of CRM
principles in aviation, but the earliest infusion of
culture-changing lessons derived from aviation into medical
practice.
Over the last few decades, Mr. Nance has
authored 18 major books and made countless appearances in the
national and international media. Already one of the nation's
most dynamic and energizing professional speakers, John Nance's
messages to medical practitioners have reached new heights of
relevance and importance as seen in his presentations to such
pace-setting entities as the Institute for Healthcare
Improvement and a who's who of healthcare organizations. Mr.
Nance’s full biography will be available on the ACHE website
before the breakfast session.

News Briefs
Accountable Care Organizations-2012 Hot
Topic!
ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations) are one
of the hottest topics as we go into the 2012 year. The
goal of ACOs is to create a managed care environment that will
provide the best possible care for patients while working to
reduce costs. They are a network of hospitals, physicians,
and other health care providers that work together to improve
quality while reducing costs. CMS has put aside $170
million to be made available next year for organizations to
start ACOs.
There will be 2 tracks that CMS has put forth.
The first is an “upside only” during the first 3 year period
where the ACO will not be liable to pay CMS if their costs
increase. The second is both upside and downside, where
ACOs will be liable to pay CMS even if costs increase in the
third year. Since ACOs are mainly focused on quality, CMS
has created an easy to follow service quality scale.
Instead of Hospital Acquired Conditions, which consist of 65
measures, there will be 33 quality measures that will be
standard across the spectrum of ACOs regardless of region.
Members will not be able to join ACOs
voluntarily. ACOs will receive lists of “probable
beneficiaries” every quarter that can possibly be assigned to
the ACO. The ACO will only receive credit for the
beneficiary once they have had a majority of their primary care
visits with the ACO. Also, 50 percent of ACO primary care
physicians must be meaningful users of HER within the second
year of the program. If the ACO doubles that number they
will become part of the EHR Incentive Program Payment. As
CMS beings to push harder toward the formation of ACOs, it is
important to know what your organization is subject to.

U.S. Supreme Court agrees to take on
health reform law
As the debate of health care reform wages on,
a new player has entered the mix. The Supreme Court has
agreed to hear both sides of the debate. The
constitutional nature of the Patient Protection and Affordable
Care Act will be examined in the spring of 2012, thus bringing
to a head all the debates and arguments over the
constitutionality of requiring individuals obtain health
coverage or pay a penalty.
